Is It OK to Drink Alcohol? There are many warnings in the Bible concerning the abuse of alcohol. These Bible illustrations suggest the dangers of alcohol consumption. In Genesis we have the stories of Noah and of Lot, both of whom seem to have had an alcohol problem. In Leviticus 10 the story of Nadab and Abihu strongly suggests that the use of alcohol had so dulled their awareness of their priestly responsibilities that God struck them down while they were in the midst of their duties. Verse 10 plainly stipulates that the priests were not to drink wine or other fermented drink. There are stern warnings in the book of Proverbs also. We believe the Bible warnings are appropriate. Alcohol is the source of much sorrow and misery in the world. Recent studies show that some people have a genetic weakness that makes them vulnerable to alcohol abuse. Unfortunately we do not know ahead of time who has that vulnerability. How much better it is to abstain and be safe. Since our bodies are the Temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16,17), and since alcohol is a poison, is it not best to refrain from putting such a poison into God's Temple and risk the dangers of dulling our spiritual sensibilities, as well as subjecting ourselves to the dangers of alcohol abuse?Where to Get Help If you are struggling with a dependence on alcohol, contact your local chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous. It will be virtually impossible for you to tackle this by yourself. You need help, and Alcoholics Anonymous has been a lifesaver for thousands of people in their fight against the bottle.
