What Is the Unpardonable Sin?
| "Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come." (Matthew 12:31-32) NKJV |

Read these additional passages for more detail (Mark 3:28,29; Luke 12:10). When Jesus spoke these words He was rebuking the Pharisees who persisted in shutting their ears to the whispers of the Holy Spirit to their hearts, and accused Jesus of healing by the power of Satan or “Beelzebub.”
As you study your Bible carefully, you will find that the only sin God can't forgive is the one we refuse to confess and forsake. I love the text in Micah 7:18,19 which says, "Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of His inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea."
The Holy Spirit speaks to our hearts through the conscience. When we do something wrong, He whispers His word of warning, urging us to repent. It is a dangerous thing to shut our ears to the pleading of the Holy Spirit. If we persist in refusing to listen, little by little His sweet voice no longer reaches our hearts. The sin against the Holy Spirit cannot be forgiven, because we have become so hardened we no longer respond to the His voice and do not confess and repent. We become hardened in our rebellion against His voice. God doesn't turn away from us. We turn away from Him.
